Kitchen Island Lighting

Kitchen Island Lighting

The kitchen is the heart of the home for many families. It is often the center of activity and conversation so the atmosphere needs to be just right. When looking to achieve the right mix of function and inviting warmth, kitchen island lighting plays a bigger role than you may think. Lighting is essential to not only visibility, but also the way a space is perceived, as well as the overall mood the space can create. Here are a few kitchen island lighting tips to help you make the most of this important space.

1. Pay attention to length

When considering the size of the lighting solution, you want to look at the length of the island itself. If you choose a light fixture that is too short, you will end up with a shadow cast around the island top. This can get in the way of visibility and make the space seem less inviting. With surface mount lighting, you will most likely be able to find a unit which will run the length of the island, or you can also opt for two units together, as well as the option of chandelier style lighting solutions.

2. Experiment with style

While many older homes feature basic fluorescent tube lighting, this area has changed with new styles emerging every year. Don’t feel like you have to stick with the more traditional options for this area of the kitchen. From hanging fixtures with decorative blown glass to rustic farmhouse style fixtures for an aged look, there is truly a style for every kitchen theme and taste. Keep in mind, a lighting fixture that is suspended should be hung around 28-34 inches above the island to get the best effect in terms of both style and light spread.

3. Choose warmer temperatures

The kitchen, especially the island area, is a place where families come together for conversations so the color temperature needs to be appropriate for that mood. A good rule of thumb is to stay around the 2700-3200 Kelvin scale in color temperature for a gentle light tone that offers inviting warmth. Of course, the decor will play a role. For instance, if you have a lot of darker tones in the kitchen, feel free to choose something a little higher in cooler temperature more towards the white, cool temperature to create a better balance.

4. Consider recessed solutions

While the suspended style of fixture is stylish and many people prefer it, some people prefer a cleaner look with recessed lighting. Recessed lighting is a great way to make a space look bigger by removing the hanging light fixtures. This is especially useful in smaller spaces or kitchens looking for more of a gentle light source that is less focused in beam spread.
