If you have little ones, having a designated play space is helpful. While you might pay a lot of attention to the other elements of décor for this area, the matter of playroom lighting shouldn’t be overlooked. The element of lighting is an important one in this area whether at home or in a daycare setting. Here are a few tips on choosing the right playroom lighting.
1. Choose the right color temperature
The right color temperature can make or break a playroom. Humans of all ages are affected by the influence of lighting. With a warmer temperature, a more relaxed mood is achieved. With a cooler temperature, a more alert attitude is achieved. For a playroom, opt for a color temperature on the cooler side, a range of 3800-4500k on the Kelvin scale, to ensure little ones stay alert during the day.
2. Use natural light where possible
There are lots of studies confirming that natural light helps with alertness and a generally good mood. However, the biggest benefit it gives humans is the help in regulating the internal sleeping rhythm. Natural light can help little ones get their needed rest later on so proper exposure to sunlight is crucial. Try to use natural light as much as possible, but if the playroom is limited on natural light, use a color temperature mimicking daylight such as 4000-4500k to help create the same effect.
3. Choose shatterproof bulbs
While bulbs shattering might be an isolated concern for most people, a shattered bulb can be a serious matter for little ones. A shatterproof bulb has a special coating that will stop the broken shards of glass from becoming flying projectiles if the bulb should shatter from impacts. This is a great way to add some extra peace of mind regarding the safety of your children. Best of all, these bulbs last a long time and are available in a range of options.
4. Install dimmers
When looking for a way to make playroom lighting more versatile, consider dimmable fixtures. This will allow you to have more control over the lighting levels and adjust them as needed. If the playroom doubles as a nap space during the day, dimmable lights will let you adjust the illumination level to accommodate this. Even if the playroom is strictly for playing, you may find dimming the lights for evening playing helps to soothe children to make them ready for bed.
