LED Shop Lights Frequently Asked Questions

What Are LED Shop Lights?

LED shop light fixtures are overhead lights that are much brighter than fluorescent shop lights, and they can include sensors that cause automatic illumination when you enter a room. They illuminate any area where a task is performed, such as your workshop. The right shop light fixture will depend on a few factors, such as the available space, the light spread required, and the mounting preference (whether walls or ceiling). Performing certain tasks with proper illumination requires that these industrial LED shop lights have the following qualities:

  • High color rendering (a color rendering index (CRI) rating of at least 80)
  • High color temperature (CCT) of 4000K or 5000K
  • High lumen output, which is dependent on the amount of space or fixture mounting height used for the given task
  • Can be surface-mounted or hung with hooks, chains, or cables

Where Are Shop Lights Used?

LED bulbs contain no mercury and are safe to use compared to fluorescent bulbs, which are hazardous when they break. Commercial and industrial LED shop lights can be used for many applications. You can also retrofit LED shop lights with one of our LED retrofit kits. Examples include garages, studios, workshops, utility rooms, sheds, storage rooms, auto repair shops, retail stores, grocery stores and small warehouses. Below are some examples of how LED shop lighting can be used:

How Long Does LED Shop Lighting Last?

Commercial LED bulbs have the highest ratings, lasting between 50,000 to 100,000 hours and 8-10 times longer than CFL incandescent bulbs or fluorescent tube lamps. The exact duration of your LED bulbs will depend on a few factors. LED light bulbs do get hot. LED lights have a heat sink in the base that dissipates heat, allowing the LED bulb to stay cool and provide longer life.

What Are the Different Types of LED Shop Lighting?

LED lights for shops come in various shapes and styles of fixtures to suit specific light requirements and coverage needs. Among these shapes and styles are linear strip lights, linear high bays, round low and high bays, UFO low and high bays, grid-mount low and high bays, and wet-rated shop lights.

How Many Shop Lights Do I Need?

The number of LED shop light fixtures needed is determined by the size of the space, ceiling height, and building usage. For a ceiling height of 10 feet or lower, we recommend LED shop lights that are around 100 watts and deliver 10000-12000 lumens. For ceiling heights of between 12-20 feet, high bay lights in the 125-175 watt (12000-21000 lumens) range are most commonly used. In areas requiring higher light levels and less glare, such as low mounting heights, reflectors and lenses can be added to our UFO fixtures.

As the ceiling height increases, the wattage and the lumen output should also increase:

  • 8-10 feet = 80-100 watts (10,000-12,000 lumens)
  • 12-20 feet = 125-175 watt (12,000-21,000 lumens)
  • 18-25 feet = 200-300 watt (22,000-35,000 lumens)
  • 20-30+ feet = 300-400 watt (35,000-47,000+ lumens)
